K-Pop Audition Tips for Beginners (2026): What to Practice and How to Film

Most beginner audition guides open with a statistic. We are going to skip that, because almost none of those numbers come from anywhere real — agencies do not publish pass rates, scout viewing times, or "dance accuracy scores."

What agencies do publish is the part that actually helps you: who can apply, which categories exist, and how results are communicated. This guide is built on that, plus the preparation craft that you control.

🎯 What the official portals actually say

  • JYP's year-round online audition states no restriction on age, gender, or nationality.
  • Categories are Vocals, Dance, Rap, Acting, and Model — not just singing and dancing.
  • For Acting, JYP asks for roughly one minute of free performance.
  • Results are communicated individually to successful applicants only. Silence is the default outcome, not a system error.
  • Campaign auditions (like SM's Global Audition rounds) set their own birth-year windows, separate from year-round online submissions.

Where to apply — official portals

Apply through the agency's own portal. Third-party sites that "submit on your behalf" are not affiliated with any agency, and several charge fees for something that is free.

AgencyOfficial audition portalFormat
JYP Entertainmentaudition.jype.comYear-round online + periodic open calls
SM Entertainmentaudition.smtown.comOnline + global audition rounds by region
HYBEweverse.io/auditionOnline submissions via Weverse

All four portals were live and reachable as of the verification date above. For current open/closed status and regional dates, use our continuously updated 2026 K-Pop Audition Calendar rather than any static list — including the one on this page.

The one rule that decides everything: age

This is where beginners waste the most time, because the internet repeats agency age ranges that were never official.

Two different things get confused:

  • Year-round online auditions. JYP's portal explicitly states no age, gender, or nationality restriction. You can submit today regardless of how old you are.
  • Campaign auditions. A specific recruitment round — a global tour, a survival program, a new group project — will define its own eligibility, usually as a birth-year range. SM's 2026 Global Audition round, for example, ran across roughly 21 regions worldwide with a defined birth-year window.

So "am I too old?" has no single answer. It depends entirely on which door you walk through.

💡 Practical takeaway

If a campaign's birth-year window excludes you, the year-round online portal usually does not. Apply there instead of giving up — and see our agency-by-agency breakdown in The Real Age Limits at HYBE, SM, JYP & YG.

Your 12-week practice plan

This is a template, not a rule. Adapt the weighting to your category — a rapper's plan should not look like a vocalist's.

WeekFocusDaily work
1–2BaselineRecord one song and one dance untouched. Note exactly where you break down.
3–4Vocal foundation30 min scales and breath control, 30 min song work
5–6Movement1 hr choreography broken into counts, 30 min conditioning
7–8Integration45 min singing while dancing — the combination is what fails first
9–10Build the submissionScript your intro, rehearse it, film multiple takes
11–12Pressure testPerform for someone else, film again, compare against week 1

The single most useful habit here is week 1: an honest, unedited baseline recording. Almost everyone skips it, and then has no way to tell whether twelve weeks of practice changed anything.

Filming: what actually ruins good performances

Judges are evaluating whether your ability can be developed. Anything that hides your ability works against you — which is why production value matters far less than clarity.

Sound comes first. A phone microphone in a quiet room beats an expensive setup in a room with echo. Hard walls and empty floors create reverb that smears pitch. Add soft material — a bed, curtains, clothing — or film in a smaller room.

Frame your whole body for dance, upper body for vocals. Cropped feet make footwork unjudgeable. For vocals, the face needs to be visible enough to read expression.

Do not process the video. Beauty filters, pitch correction, and heavy editing are the fastest route to being dismissed, because they remove exactly what the agency is trying to measure. Submit raw takes.

Light from the front. A window in front of you is free and better than a ring light behind you. Backlighting turns you into a silhouette.

Introduce yourself briefly and clearly. Name, age, location, category. Then perform. Long introductions eat the attention you need for the performance itself.

Mistakes that get videos skipped

  • Song choice above your range. A clean mid-range performance reads better than a strained big note. Pick something you can repeat ten times without wearing out.
  • Copying a cover instead of the original. Judges know the source choreography and hear the original phrasing.
  • No visible practice arc. If you reapply with an identical video, there is nothing new to evaluate.
  • Submitting to the wrong category. The Model and Acting tracks exist and are less crowded than Vocals. Apply where your actual strength is.
  • Missing the portal's own format rules. Each audition page states its own requirements. Read that page, not a summary of it — including this one.

Watch: the official JYP audition channel

JYP runs a dedicated audition channel with official announcements and application walkthroughs. This is the agency's own channel, not a fan or reaction account.

Before you submit: final checklist

  • Song sits comfortably inside your range
  • Audio recorded in a room without echo, no pitch correction
  • Full body visible for dance, upper body for vocals
  • No filters, no edits, single continuous take where possible
  • Introduction under 15 seconds
  • Submitted through the agency's own portal, in the correct category
  • Format requirements read directly from that audition's page

Audition windows open and close without much notice. Check the live calendar before you finish your video, not after.

❓ Frequently asked questions

How long should my audition video be? Follow the length stated on the specific audition page you are applying to, since it varies by agency and category. JYP's acting category, for example, asks for about one minute of free performance. When no length is given, keeping a performance clip under about 90 seconds is a safe default.

Am I too old to audition for K-pop? It depends on which audition. JYP's year-round online audition states no restriction on age, gender, or nationality. Campaign auditions such as regional global audition rounds define their own birth-year eligibility, so an individual campaign may exclude you while the year-round portal does not.

Do I need a professional studio to record vocals? No. A quiet room with controlled echo and a phone microphone is enough. Room acoustics matter far more than microphone price, because reverb is what makes pitch hard to judge.

Can I audition if I am not Korean and do not speak Korean? Yes. JYP's online audition explicitly places no restriction on nationality, and the major agencies accept international applicants. Korean ability helps during training but is not an application requirement.

What categories can I apply for? JYP's online audition lists Vocals, Dance, Rap, Acting, and Model. Applying to the category that matches your actual strength matters more than applying to the most popular one.

How will I know if I passed? Agencies contact successful applicants individually. JYP states that results are delivered only to those who pass, so no reply generally means you were not selected rather than that something went wrong with your submission.

Should I use filters or edit my audition video? No. Filters, pitch correction, and heavy editing obscure the raw ability the agency is trying to evaluate, and agencies increasingly screen for processed footage. Submit unedited takes.

Are dance covers acceptable, or do I need original choreography? Covers are acceptable when executed cleanly and matched to the original choreography rather than to another person's cover. Original choreography can help you stand out only if it is polished.

Can I apply to more than one agency at the same time? Yes. Applying to several agencies is normal, and each portal is independent. Tailor the submission to each audition's stated requirements rather than sending one identical file everywhere.

Where can I see which auditions are currently open? Use a continuously updated calendar rather than a static list, because windows change often. Our 2026 K-Pop Audition Calendar tracks open and closed status for the major agencies.

Bottom line

  • Apply through official portals only, and read that audition's own requirements.
  • Clarity beats production value: fix your room's echo before buying equipment.
  • Submit raw footage — processing removes the thing being measured.
  • Age eligibility depends on the specific audition, not on internet folklore.

Do You Need Korean or a TOPIK Score for a K-Pop Audition?

There is no verified TOPIK score requirement in the JYP online audition evidence checked on October 8, 2026 KST. Do not treat a supposed “TOPIK II 80%” benchmark as an admission rule or a fast track. The evidence also does not prove that every application step or later conversation can be completed in English.

Can Foreigners Apply for a K-Pop Audition in 2026?

Yes: JYP’s online audition listed no nationality restriction when checked on October 8, 2026 KST. That answers whether a foreign applicant can enter this particular audition. It does not establish eligibility for every agency, a place as a trainee, or permission to move to Korea.
